Alternative House works with students of accredited universities and colleges who are enrolled in programs that require an internship as part of the program. Undergraduate and Master's-level internships are available. On a limited basis, we may accept applications from high school internship programs.

There are two schedules available for Master's-level interns in the Community Counseling or Mental Health Counseling track: (1) Monday & Wednesday 4 pm to 10 pm and Saturday 12 pm to 9 pm; and, (2) Tuesday & Thursday 4 pm to 10 pm and Sunday 2 pm to 10 pm. Interns perform various duties based on their field of study. Examples include:

If you are interested in applying for an internship, please complete the online Alternative House Volunteer/Intern Application. Make sure to include the total number of hours needed, semester for desired internship, and supervision requirements. In addition, please email your current resume to, or 703.356.6360. Once these documents are received, we will contact you to schedule an interview. Summer and Fall semester interviews begin in March. Spring semester interviews begin in September.

Please note that there is a fee, paid by the intern, to defray the cost of fingerprinting and a background check. The fee is $46.00 for graduate-level interns and $43.00 for undergraduate and high school interns.
