Alternative House has a very active volunteer program. In 2014, 1,574 volunteers provided almost 15,000 hours of community service. Using Fairfax County's valuation of volunteer hours, this equates to almost $300,000 of time and talent given to the young people served by Alternative House. Volunteers play so many roles at Alternative House, it would be impossible to list them all.

Our volunteer opportunities generally fall into two categories:

Volunteers who Interact Directly with Youth

These opportunities involve completing the online application and interview process. In addition, volunteers are asked to make a 6-month to 12-month commitment, attend required training, and must be 18 or older.

Volunteers for all programs operated by the Alternative House are required to pass two background checks. The Emergency Shelter for Teens is licensed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. According to licensing requirements, volunteers working at the shelter must pass a fingerprint background check and a child protective services background check - the cost is $50. Other programs operated by Alternative House require a criminal history background check and a child protective services background check - the cost is $40. Background check costs are the responsibility of the volunteer.

If you are interested in this type of volunteer position at Alternative House, your first step is to attend one of our Open Door Information Sessions. During these sessions, you will learn about Alternative House and our programs, meet staff and tour our Emergency Shelter for Teenagers. Attendance is required for anyone interested in volunteering directly with our young people.
